Do you have any rooms available?
Busy seasons: Admissions are on a rolling basis as things are constantly changing, so our room availability is strictly predicated on the left over spaces when the application process is complete.
We might not always have a single room available so please diversify room preferences on the application so you can save a spot in a shared room and wait to see if a single opens up.
How much are your rooms?
They range from about $1700-$2400. More details can be found on our website.
When will I hear back from you about my application?
It takes 2 business days - 1 week to process applications. Unless it is a busy season April-June 15, you typically hear back in less than 24 hours. If it has been longer than A week, please reach out to the Admissions Team at admissions@ishdc.org
Can a resident opt out of the food and have reduced room and board rates?
No
Do single rooms have their own bathrooms?
No
Are refrigerators permitted in rooms?
No
Are microwaves permitted in rooms?
No
Can I bring a vehicle?
No
Can I change rooms once I arrive?
Yes. You will need to submit a room change form which can be found in the general house WhatsApp chat named “House Uplifts and Updates”.
Where can I store my food?
We have communal refrigerators and microwaves throughout the House. In your room, you may store dry goods in tightly sealed containers. We discourage all eating in rooms. As a house that
is over 100 years old in a densely populated urban area like Washington, DC, we want to make sure that we are not doing anything to attract pests in the buildings. We have a diligent maintenance team that keeps our common areas sanitary, but it is up to residents to keep their rooms equally clean.
What is Wi-Fi connection like?
We do have Wi-Fi access points throughout the House, but the reality of an older house with thick walls is that certain parts of the House may have stronger connections than others. It is recommended that you have an extra device to boost your connection. We do have ethernet cords to offer if needed, but it is highly recommended to bring your own. Ethernet ports are in each room.
What kind of diets are accommodated?
We only offer traditional and plant-based/vegan diets. We do not offer individualized meal plans.
Food allergies are fairly common in our community, and our kitchen team is well-prepared to accommodate them. While tree nuts and other common allergens are typically avoided—especially outside of desserts—any entrées containing allergens will always have an alternative option available.
With only two chefs in the kitchen, they’re able to quickly get to know each resident and manage individual dietary needs efficiently and thoughtfully.
Can I reserve a room for days other than the 1st and 15th?
No. You are welcome to arrive whenever you desire after your reservation start date, but your reservation will begin on the 1st or 15th.
When do I make my first payment?
You will receive an invoice on the first day of each month. At that point, you will have 5 days to make your payment. For more information, please contact billing@ishdc.org.
How can I make a change to my reservation before arriving?
Send an email with your date change request and someone from the Admissions Team will contact you with updates.
When can I expect my deposit to return to my card?
5-6 weeks after you check out.
Do I need to bring my own bedding?
Since many of our residents fly into the country/state with limited luggage and at odd hours, your bed is made at the time of arrival. You will be charged a $75 linen fees on your first invoice.
Can I have guests over to the House?
During normal hours. Day guests: Yes. Each resident can bring up to 5 guests. More than 5 guests will require permission from House leadership.
Can I have overnight guests?
Yes. Reach out to admissions@ishdc.org to get the form for overnight guest approval. It is also on your portal. Guests are limited to a maximum of 3 nights. Your account will be charged $75 per night.
Questions about specific reservations outside of these questions need to be referred to the Admission Coordinator at admissions@ishdc.org. If ever you’re in doubt, have them email admissions@ishdc.org.
