Carnegie Mellon University's Conference and Event Services team manages summer housing for students relocating to Pittsburgh for internships. However, expanding its reach to new interns was a challenge. As Director Katy Tufts explains, "We are a Conference and Event Services team that doesn't have a sales team…and we are heavily focused on the event logistics." With limited time and marketing resources, the department needed a way to increase visibility among students actively searching for summer intern housing.
Carnegie Mellon partnered with Intern Housing Hub for the 2024 booking season. The platform became an extension of the university's marketing strategy, helping increase visibility while allowing staff to focus on housing operations. Assistant Director Dallas Trescher describes the partnership as "a strategic and very crucial part of our marketing strategy for intern housing. It's been unbelievably helpful at every point." She adds, "The biggest thing for me is the marketing. It's really getting our name out there."
CMU has seen measurable growth in its intern housing bookings:
2023: 32 interns, before CMU began using Intern Housing Hub
2024: 54 interns, during CMU’s first summer using the platform
2025: 86 interns, during CMU’s second summer using the platform
This increase in bookings represents a 169% increase over two years. While Dallas credits several factors that contributed to the program's success, she said, "Intern Housing Hub definitely had a really wonderful effect for those years."
Beyond increasing bookings, Intern Housing Hub has helped Carnegie Mellon reduce the staff workload associated with marketing and lead generation, allowing the Conference and Event Services team to focus on housing operations while inquiries arrive directly in their inbox. As Katy explains, "It takes a whole workload off on-campus staff when it comes to a marketing effort." And Dallas continued, "I think [Intern Housing Hub] is going to be an integral step moving forward."
